Get on these three supplements to drive up your testosterone levels
By Jim Stoppani, PhD
Testosterone. The word itself implies masculinity. And masculinity suggests strong, lean muscularity. It’s what every male bodybuilder wants and the more the better. As much as the word testosterone evokes muscularity, true muscularity relies on the hormone testosterone because it enhances strength, muscle mass and leanness. Testosterone acts directly on the nervous system to improve the firing rate of motor nerves that contract muscle fibers, boosting strength.
It spikes muscle growth by decreasing the breakdown of muscle fibers and stimulating their buildup. And it aids fat loss by encouraging fat cells to store less fat and give up more. So if you want to be stronger, bigger and leaner, the answer is more testosterone. Stacking these three supplements will give you just that.
TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS
This herb grows in the United States and Mexico, as well as in Asia. Tribulus terrestris has been used as e male aphrodisiac for centuries; given this history, scientists investigated its potential use as a testosterone booster. They found that tribulus can increase testosterone, mainly by influencing the pituitary gland in the brain to release more luteinizing hormone (LH) into the bloodstream, where it travels to the testicles to stimulate greater testosterone production. Research also shows that tribulus enhances vasodilation of blood vessels, much like nitric oxide, thereby increasing blood flow to the muscles. It may also mimic the effects of insulin at muscle cells, which can further boost the anabolic effect on muscle growth.
Take two doses of 500-1,500 mg of tribulus per day separated by 6-8 hours. To make the most of its immediate effects on strength and blood flow, get in one dose 30-60 minutes before a workout. Take tribulus for no more than 4-8 weeks, and allow four weeks off before using it again.
FORSKOLIN
Forskolin is the active ingredient from the herb Coleus forskohlii. You may have noticed this herbal extract listed on your fat-burning supplement. Forskolin activates the enzyme adenylate cyclase, which stimulates the release of bodyfat to be burned for fuel. Adenylate cyclase is also found in the Leydig cells that produce testosterone in the testicles and is known to be involved in testosterone production. We’ve recommended forskolin for boosting testosterone levels for many years based on theory and anecdotal experience. A 2005 study from the University of Kansas (Lawrence) confirmed our line of thinking. Scientists reported in the journal Obesity Research that young, overweight males who took forskolin for 12 week lost more bodyfat and increased free testosterone levels and muscle mass more compared to subjects taking a placebo. (Free testosterone is the unbound form of testosterone critical for performing the hormone’s functions in the body.)
DOSE: To best obtain forskolin’s fatburning and T-stimulating effects, choose a Coleus forskohlii supplement standardized to provide 20-50 mg of forskolin, and take it 2-3 times a day.
CARNITINE
Another supplement long known for its fat-burning effects, carnitine is essential for transporting bodyfat to mitochondria, the machinery in the muscles that burn fat for fuel. New research from the University of Connecticut (Storrs) finds that supplementing with carnitine increases the amount of androgen receptors in muscle cells. Free testosterone binds to these androgen receptors to stimulate its growth-promoting effects. The more androgen receptors you have in jour muscles, the more testosterone your body can utilize to perform its functions. This is critical when taking supplements such as Tribulus terrestris and forskolin that increase T Levels. Having higher testosterone levels and a greater number of androgen receptors equates to significantly more muscle growth.
DOSE: Take 1-3 grams of carnitine in the form of L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine or L-carnitine-L-tartrate with breakfast and pre- and postworkout shakes.
